30 November 13:00-19:00House Blivande

The invitation

Join us for a special cultural day at House Blivande, exploring winter ritual, the cultural diversity of Ukraine, and our sense of identity and belonging in a changing world.

Our gathering will be anchored in the ethnographic film From Bloom to Flame — a documentary about a Bulgarian ritual tradition in Bessarabia, Ukraine, silenced by war and brought to us by visiting ethnographic filmmaker Tetiana Staneva.

We will learn about Bessarabia’s and Ukraine’s rich cultural diversity — how minority traditions are misused in false narratives in Russia’s war of aggression, and how cultural awakening and resilience serve to defend core human values.

We will also explore old Bessarabian winter rituals preserved by ethnic minorities, and bring them to life through circle dance, craft, and ceremony.

Most importantly, we will hold multiple questions together, as we imagine new ways of belonging in a world in transition:

    • How are our own heritages and lineages calling to be remembered, renewed, or released?

    • What stories and rituals help us endure liminal times? What flames are we tending — and what do we wish to carry from the past into the year ahead?

    • What are the links to local Indigenous histories of erasure and preservation?

    • And how can we, across languages and histories, shape a shared culture of aliveness — one that honors difference without fear?

    The Film

From Bloom to Flame/ Мертва квітка, 2025 Dir. Tetiana Stanieva (Ukraine) '73mins -with English and Bulgarian subtitles

Set in southern Ukraine’s vibrant and multicultural region of Bessarabia, the film restores and enriches Ukraine’s cultural map, highlighting its richness and diversity.

In the village of Krynychne (Chushmelii), historically home to ethnic Bulgarians who settled there in the 18th century fleeing Ottoman rule, unique winter rites of passage have been preserved. Among them is the crafting of the wax flower — kitka: a symbol of the New Year, new unions of love, and maidenly tenderness.

From Bloom to Flame is a six-year observational documentary exploring how war destroys not only lives, but also culture. Once alive with folk rituals, Krynychne has seen its celebrations silenced by russia’s full-scale invasion. The horo dances no longer gather women in circles, and the ritual wax flowers are no longer made. A tradition preserved through centuries, the flowers are now melted down into trench candles, and the customs themselves are at risk of fading into memory.

The film raises several important questions:

    • How have the lives and values of the Bulgarian community in Ukraine changed? How do they keep beauty alive amid displacement and erasure?

    • How can culture be preserved when there is no one left to pass it on—especially in villages where ethnic community life has long been rooted?

    • How can these communities become voices of truth, countering Russian disinformation and propaganda?

The answers are multilayered, unfolding, and never final. They hold keys for the future of Ukraine and Europe, for our freedom, and for our sense of belonging.

We can best hold these questions together, in community, using embodied and artistic forms. Join us!
